I Stand

Spoiler Alert: I'm a fat girl. Always have been. It took me a VERY long time to be cool with that and even embrace it, but now that I do, it's one of my most steadfast core beliefs--that no one's body is 'wrong,' and that you're given what you're given for a reason.

I'm very into body love, size acceptance, and the belief of Health at Every Size, and I am super proud to know and stand with a WHOLE lot of wonderful people--big and small--who feel the same way. We believe that bullying and shaming people about their bodies will never be 'helping them.' This is especially true for kids.

Georgia is trying to fix fat kids with ad campaigns that shame, bully and insult--they call it 'Strong4Life.' So we body lovers? We're standing with a different message:

You can encourage health, nutritious food and joyful movement without shaming bodies.

"When did you first know you wanted to be an actor?"

Most actors say that they discovered in high school when they did their first real show, but I knew WAY before that. Like, at age 3. But how do you quantify that? Oh, I know! With RIDICULOUSLY APT PICTURES.

Steppin' Out

No better way to actualize a dream than to take action, right?

When you put big, bold moves out into the universe, success comes back to greet you!

I bought my tickets for LA, and then I booked a starring role in a film.

I made TV my goal, and a month later I was working on "30 Rock."

Well, our collective goal for FRANNY is to have it premiere at next year's Sundance! How do I take action to fulfill THAT goal?

1. Sundance research--who's going? Who's getting accepted? What kind of work are they doing?

2. Big ol' vision board that's loaded with 'for your consideration' verbiage!

3. Got myself a premiere dress.

That's right, a premiere dress. What am I wearing? Oh, this old thing.

It's got long sleeves for those Utah winters, it's classy, AND it has purple sequins. And I can't wait to wear it alongside Frances Fisher, Steve Howey, Annaleigh Ashford & Ash Christian next Sudance!

There ya go, universe. ;)

Better than Gifts of the Magi!

Happy New Year, friends!

I am SO READY that I hit the ground running! (No, seriously--I tried to work on Monday, and apparently it was a 'bank holiday.' What kinda hogwash is that?!)

But aside from being PUMPED for the next 12 months, I have to share with you like a 5-year-old.

!!!!I GOT PRESENTS!!!!!

Here were my top *2* this year!

2. A Melodica.

What is a melodica, you ask? It's a delightful merging of a recorder and a piano. It's AMAZING. AND it can do this:

Yeah, I'm gonna learn a lot of bizarre songs and play them. All the time. THANKS MOM!

1. MY VERY OWN STAR IN URSA MAJOR, SNITCHES.

My bestie got me a STAR immediately south of the Big Dipper. She's big into meanings, and this was her logic: She didn't want to get me a zodiac star, because that seemed too cliche and predictable. So she looked into the other major constellations (Cassiopeia, etc.), and she discovered that the Great Bear constellation (Ursa Major) is seen as the strongest and most powerful in the sky.

She's immensely supportive of me and my career, and she knows exactly how to motivate me even more than I already am (nearly an impossible task)! She got me a powerful star in a powerful, fame-laden constellation. :)

To add more Awesome to this? She was able to send up a message for me. She asked me about my favorite Living Mantras, which are gracious tools from my career coach, Dallas Travers, and sent them up in a satellite.

And her message was this:

Yeah. It's EPICALLY awesome, just like her. :)

Sharin' and Declarin'

2011 is nearly over, and WHAT. A. YEAR.

The best way that I found to ring in the new year was with my career coach Dallas Travers' "How to Design Your Best Year Yet!"(that's her blog with instructions. HIGHLY recommended!)

Using her steps, I've spent the last 2 years detailing the year in review, and setting my sights forward. It all culminates in declaring goals for the upcoming year, and just to share:

*2011 Career Goals*
1: I will book at least 4 more East Coast TV roles!
Pretty donesies, considering that I did 2 films and 2 TV episodes! :)

2: I will have the career traction to make LA a viable option for 2012!
Done and done!

What does this leave for 2012? Something REALLY exciting, I assure you. I was talking to an LA friend, and she said:

"I'm so mad that you're not here, but I'm so happy for WHY you're not here! [read: FRANNY] When are you getting out to LA?!"

My response was, "I'm gonna be ballsy here and put it out into the universe--I'll get out to LA this spring for the first time, when I book and film my first pilot!" She LOVED it!

So there it is! One goal this year, but a doozy. In 2012 I will book a series regular on a pilot and have my first trip to LA be for work!

It feels like the right goal, and it's just so EXCITING to me that I can't not pursue it with every cell of my being!

May the upcoming year bring you STELLAR success and awesomeosity aplenty!

Oh, I Wanna be a Producer...

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

"Franny" is a dark comedy feature film now in post production. The film stars Frances Fisher (Titanic, The Lincoln Lawyer), Steve Howey (Shameless, Reba), newcomer Jen Ponton (as Franny), Annaleigh Ashford (Wicked, Legally Blonde, Rent) and Broadway veterans Mary Testa, Ruth Gotschall, Eddie Korbich, directed by Ash Christian, and produced by Jordan Yale Levine, Ash Christian, and Amy Salko Robertson.

Synopsis: Despite the odds FRANNY PETERSON always knew she’d make it BIG! With a heart of gold and a loving and kind personality, all 250lbs of her knew that one day she’d make it out of her small town. Who knew that today would be that day...while waiting in line at the bank listening to music on her ipod, in walks, from cowboy boots to cowboy hat, the most gorgeous guy she’s ever seen!! When their eyes meet she’s sure this is the one...The fact that RICK is now holding up the bank and taking her hostage does not deter her from her mission. This wasn’t exactly the way she dreamed it would all go down, but she’s eager to get out of her small town and is up for the adventure. Unfortunately for FRANNY, RICK has other plans.

We are currently searching for finishing funds for the film (which will include editing, music licensing, color correction, sound mixing, titles, etc...). We wrapped the film Dec 1st and are currently entering post production.

Aaaaand...we're WRAPPED!

I cannot even communicate what an AMAZING, WONDERFUL time I had doing this film. It's ineffable.

Imagine the best summer camp ever--no horrible people or bad camp food or strict counselors--but all incredible friends, fresh air, and rousing bonfires after a solid day's work. That's exactly what it was like. :) Best Camp Ever, Making Movies, doing my first Starring Role. OHMAZING.

I'm home now, and while I am happy to see my husband and bunny and friends, I'm also feeling the hole where FRANNY was. I'm missing my Franny family--especially our LA members; our producer Amy, and my co-stars Steve and Frances.

What IS going to be fun for me is this--while this is my 3rd film, the first 2 haven't been released yet. So I don't yet know the thrill of having a release and reunion with everyone! Our producer Jordan is psyched for what comes now--he can't wait to pitch the heck out of Franny. ;)

What a magical, special and incredible experience this has been. I couldn't ask for a better story, better team, or better setting--I had a BEAUTIFUL time, and what a gift to have my first *ginormous* role be in such a loving family!

Thank you ALL for an unforgettably amazing time, I love you all!

Halfway Through Production!

Hey y'all!

Having a BLAST here on the FRANNY set! We've collected some PRIME ink.

We're featured in The Warwick Advertiser, Around the Lake, The Express Times (my hometown paper!), and we even got coverage on local News 12 in Orange County, NY!

Though we're all paring down our FRANNY buzz to save the really good stuff for festivals and releases, I have to share this with you all. Everyone's been urging me to go red for YEARS...

It IS a wig. But is red a future possibility? Perhaps...

My co-star, Steve Howey (Reba, Shameless) just arrived today, and we've already hit it off! Which is good. Considering that he's my love interest for the film.

I can't communicate how much FUN I've been having with my film family--from the cast, to the amazing creative team, to the INCREDIBLE crew, every moment with these guys is full of fun and joyful work. And it's not just me! Everyone feels the same way, so I know it's not just my peppy nature at work!

I am SO blessed to have a dream role on a dream story with a dream team. :D

FRANNY arrives!

I'm writing LIVE on my one day off for the entire shoot! FRANNY began filming yesterday in scenic upstate New York, where it's been gorgeous and sunny and full of vibrant autumn colors!

I'm going into SERIOUS detail, here. I will bold the important stuff if you wanna skim!

SUNDAY

I hopped in the car with our producer and production coordinator to get to set for an EARLY start on Monday! The whole crew came to the headquarters on Sunday night, and we threw a celebratory BBQ in the freezing cold with a giant bonfire going. It's like camp for adults! XD

MONDAY

I moseyed on over to hair and make-up at the crack of dawn to get tanned, glowy and bouffanted. Our H/MU team--Yiselle and Morgan--are so friendly and super-lovely, and we'd gotten to know each other at the bonfire. I was then suited up into full bizarre Franny apparel.

Franny really marches to the beat of her own drum. So a glittery lily-pad shirt paired with a tropical gypsy skirt and hot pink Keds? MARVELOUS.

After I was all dressed and ready to go, I hopped in the car with our 2nd AD, Niki (who I adore), and swallowed a quick cup of coffee and an egg sandwich. I was catapulted into the first scene shot--which was me in my car, Sweet Yellow (a yellow 1965 Mustang). This poor car! It's SO broken-down and falling apart--so much so that the floor under the passenger seat has disintegrated.

We moved to a scene that required that poor car to move--which meant it was going in neutral, and the Art dept. was pushing in the back. ;)

We also shot a scene in a drive-through, and I moved to a SECOND car full of character--one being billed as a green Pinto!

I got to order food from an apathetic fast food server, played by our director. :)
So fun! We then moved to this gorgeous boutique for a shopping scene, where I worked with my first principal actor, Alicia Sable as the sales girl.

I had Tuesday off, but visited the set of Franny's employ, a dog grooming salon. I met Frances Fisher, who plays my mother (SHE IS THE BEST), and I can't wait to work with her!!

In actually on set right this moment as I type, in a quick break while they film a shot that I'm not in. :) I get to play with dogs all day, and my bosses are Broadway actresses Mary Testa and Ruth Gottschall! Dooooo fun. Best job to date, hands down. :)

The Calm Before the Storm

My life changes significantly on Monday, when we begin shooting FRANNY. :)

These last days beforehand are full of quiet promise, as I get together different mailings and e-blasts and blog posts! I'm still waiting on all the details (what day I leave, when I come back), but I know some exciting things--I have the script, and I know who my co-stars are (I'm keeping it mum, but EGADS)!

I'm spending lots of time with my husband before I leave, too, because I don't know how frequently I'll be home from start-to-finish. We're having lavish dinners together and demolishing Netflix TV (specifically Arrested Development and Buffy)--which is *amaziiiing*!

Trying to do as much and appreciate as much as I can while I'm here, before the whole game changes in a really PHENOMENAL way. XD

In fact, I'll be up to my gills with filming next week, so before I miss this:

"THE HEART, SHE HOLLER" PREMIERES on SUNDAY!

The miniseries runs nightly, Sunday through Friday--catch me on Weds. and Thurs.!

I'm bringing a camera to remind me to take pictures and video where appropriate, so I'm hoping to combine those with some great blogs while we're in production!

What a week! I've been just reeling from the news about FRANNY!

I've had the intention of creating a press release for myself for about a year; it was a challenge that I wanted to meet by creating my own buzz and not being afraid to share my successes. If there was ever a good time to make one, this was it!

CHARACTER DUMPLING FINDS DREAM ROLE IN “FRANNY”

Actress Jen Ponton is about to embark upon the kind of role that most actors only dream of—the title role in Ash Christian's indie comedy, FRANNY.

Making this opportunity all-the-more juicy is the fact that Ponton is a woman of size—a budding market as studios and networks try to better reflect the diversity of their viewers. Indeed, after actress Melissa McCarthy (ABC's“Mike and Molly”) took home an Emmy, plus-size actresses are facing new and exciting career prospects. For Ponton, it is no different. “I know that my type is classically the best friend and the second banana,” she says, “but I've always felt like I had the spirit of a leading lady.”

Newest Indie Starlet? Srsly?

If the idea that 'every actor has their breakout role' is true, then here is mine:

I've just booked the starring, title role in the new indie feature film FRANNY. XD

It was a long process--the role is so perfect for me, and I auditioned for it, like, a month ago! There were weeks of hearing nothing, and then out of the BLUE, my manager called me last week telling me that I'd been called back to read with the casting directors and the director, Ash Christian.

*(Small world: Ash and I were actually both cast in King Kelly! We had no scenes together and had never met, but we ended up being Facebook buds before I even realized he was directing Franny!)

(Smaller world: I also auditioned for Ash's last film, Petunia. Cast by Susan Shopmaker, who also cast King Kelly.)*

ANYWAY!

I had my callback with the PalmStar gents and Ash, and we just had the BEST time. It felt so right, and I felt like it just HAD to be what was next for me.

Lo and behold, my manager--who has the best way of leaving cryptic voicemails when I've booked something ("You're in big trouble. Call me back.")--put on his best aloof voice as he asked me when I'd be going to LA.

"Well, I'm NOT, if I'm Franny!"

"Well then, I guess you're not going to LA, kiddo!"

And it's true--I will likely NOT be fulfilling that trip, since we're shooting for 3-5 weeks starting in November! I'll miss my friends, but clearly, booking something like this was the whole reason I intended on going in the first place. ;)

I am so, so SO VERY EXCITED. As we go into production, I will do my best to supply pictures and news and even video!

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS POST:

I would be utterly remiss if I didn't mention the GIANT FLOODS OF SUPPORT AND LOVE AND POSITIVITY that my friends and family and peers and colleagues (and acquaintances, even!) have unleashed upon me! I swam against the current of others' faith for so long, and I'm finally at a point where all my people are better cheerleaders than I could have even hoped for! You can't have any idea how much it means to me, or how wonderful it feels when you express your belief, support, love and congratulations to me. It means EVERYTHING!

"The Heart, She Holler" has finally landed a premiere date--12:30am on Sunday, November 6th! (As in, late late Sunday, early early Monday.)

Adult Swim has just released the promotional video, and it is BEYOND INSANE:

Confused-but-delighted feedback is popping up all over the intarwebs! Important things to know:

-For now, it's a 6-episode miniseries. I know the original intention was to be a full-on episodic, but I'm unsure of the status right now.

-It's gonna run NIGHTLY (not weekly) from Sunday 11/6 through Friday, 11/11. 12:30am each night!

-My episodes are #4 & 5, so I *should* be on Weds. and Thurs.

I know for a fact that this show is offensive, repulsive, insane and HI-LARIOUS. I can't wait to see it!

Audition-Palooza!

I am on a ROLL with auditions (mostly for feature films)--6 in less than 2 weeks! I love the snowballing of work going on--I'm super excited to see how the rest of the year works out!

Among these:
-I was called in for *3* offices who've never called me in before
-I was called in for my very first starring role!

It's just the perfect time, too. :) I'm working on a goal for the remainder of the year: to book my first GUEST STAR billing for TV!

With a record high of *23* shows filming in NY (including the return of Sesame Street...which would be heart-stoppingly *AWESOME*), I think I stand some pretty good chances. :) Yeehaw!

"Kelly" Parties it Up!

I feel like such a wild child! (This is probably because 'a crazy night' for me is falling asleep to a Katt Williams comedy special with the lights on.)

"King Kelly" wrapped last Friday, and by Friday night, we had the celebratory bar party. The star and our whole crew were deliriously tired, and had maybe snuck in a quick nap before getting ready for festivities.

None was more excited for this party than my dear husband, Andrew, who was so thrilled to come that he even got a haircut. ;) *Adorable*!

Though "King Kelly" is laying low for the time being, the first released article is right here on indieWIRE. Enjoy! :D

Delighted to share some fantastic news with y'all:

My episode of 30 Rock last year ("Reaganing") has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing!

Who's behind the hilarity? This guy:

Mr.Matt Hubbard, producer and writer for 30 Rock. And yes, that is a 2009 Outstanding Writing Emmy in his hands.

Not only is Matt pee-your-pants ridiculously funny, but he's also a really kind, encouraging, great guy--I worked with him directly on set, and you just couldn't find a nicer dude!

So happy for this crazy-talented writer, as well as the whole 30 Rock team and their veritable SLEW of nominations--they deserve such rampant success!

My Favorite Rabbit Holes

I think we can all list OODLES of sites that magically suck the precious hours from our day. Aside from the default social media hubs of Facebook and Twitter, there's an absolute abundance of delight and zombie-fodder to be found online.

A few of these sites, however, lead me down the rabbit hole with neither guilt nor dread! Each precious second wasted diving into their content leaves me hungry for more. Without further ado, my very favorite rabbit hole sites.

1. Kindertrauma.com

If you weren't aware, I am an absolute horror fanatic. I bleed Stephen King, and I could watch all kinds of horror movies--B or Amazing--for hours on end! Enter Kindertrauma, a site run by 'Uncle Lancifer' and 'Aunt John.' They harken back to movies that may have scarred you irrevocably as a child, and there are SO. MANY. Each one has a full-out review and a list of must-see moments! I LOVE their writing, I love their voices, and I love our shared passion for monsters. If you're into that kinda crazy stuff, go to!

The Oatmeal, a blog/comic/palace of delight, is run by Matthew Inman, King of Hilarity. Through nifty how-to guides and fanciful poetry, he combines simple illustrations with totally batsh*t insanity and makes my life all the more wonderful.

Through similar comic styling but more personal and fleshed-out storytelling, Allie Brosh equally delights here at her comic-blog! Adorable and witty, Allie was EFFING DETERMINED to become a full-time blogger, and she finally did through this super-duper-popular site! And no wonder--she's a total weirdo (in the greatest way ever), and has amazing content all from her life stories, from when she was a sugar-buzzed little girl all the way into adulthood woes, like moving. With highly neurotic dogs. A goldmine rabbit hole indeed--and one that will leave you feeling like her best buddy, too!

I don't quite know where to start with Colleen, aka The Communicatrix--but firstly, I know her (online, that is), and she is MARVELOUS. Insightful, passionate, hilarious, PURPOSEFUL, and such a giving, creative spirit! In fact, she's celebrating her 50th birthday by raising $50,000 for WriteGirl.org, and to celebrate, she's shaving her freakin' head. And, as of today? She's over $38K. I freaking LOVE her. "King" of Queens

What an AWESOME time I had last week!

I recently booked a supporting role in the indie film "King Kelly," a story about a smarmy, cheeky girl with big dreams of taking over the internet porn-o-verse. Louisa Krause stars as Kelly herself, who films all her days (and freaky-deeky nights) on an iPhone and throws them up on YouTube. I'm playing Angela, her older sister, who has little tolerance for Kelly's nasty attitude and shady business ethics. It's kind of exciting for me, because (aside from being a supporting role), I was also cast as *MY AGE*! This is a first, folks! Angela is married with a 6-year-old son. While I fully embrace the fact that I look like a 12-year-old, I'm so happy to have been cast as a legit adult! :D

I was told to take LOTS OF GREAT PICTURES while I was on set, and though I am *terrible* at taking pictures (I get super-distracted), I made a concerted effort to pull out my camera and grab at least a couple of moments.

King Kelly is only my 2nd big indie film (the first was Jack and Diane , still being produced), and the experience was still so new for me! Our director Andrew Neel was just FANTASTIC--really great to work with, fun, excellent direction, and we had a lot of playful discovery in the scenes.

I had such a great time on-set with them, and I can't wait to see the final product!

As I've recently had the GREAT pleasure in working on a fledgling TV Show ("The Heart, She Holler"), I also got my very first invitation to a WRAP PARTY!

Since "Holler" is done filming for now, the team was able to kick back and enjoy all their hard work. So on Thursday night, I got to chill with all my fellow actors, crew members and show creators, catch up with them and enjoy a GORGEOUS rooftop party!

I had a super-good time getting to know everyone a little better, getting excited about other people's new projects, and hearing that the show looks *hilarious* and creepy (which is the best combination that my mind can conjure)!

Monsters Under....the Sink?

One of the very best parts of my day is the morning, when, bleary-eyed, I make my way to the shower.

Why?

Because this is what I see:

Hubby and I absolutely fell in love with this monster bathroom set way back when we were registering for our wedding. We found it at Kohl's! We were really trying to make classy, adult decisions, but we couldn't resist all the bright, fun colors, the googly eyes and polka dots.

So we registered for this wonderful set! Out of all the crock pots and sheets and photo frames and toasters, we were just SALIVATING over this bathroom set.

Lo and behold, the night after the wedding, we have received ONE lone Monster gift: the shower curtain. What happened? we wondered. We registered for every. Last. Monster. Item. Surely our guests saw these on the lists!

And then it clicked. Oh, those pranksters, Jen and Andrew! our lovely guests were thinking. Surely they wouldn't want a bathroom set that was made for a 5-year-old!

We love you, guests. But that was cold.

If you are as tickled by this set as we are, they're phasing them out at Kohl's, but there's still some fun stuff left. ;)

Recurring in the Holler!

Hey folks!

Thanks for hanging in while I did various things like, oh, getting married, for instance.

That's right! Hubby and I did our nuptials in May, and I spent a nice amount of time wearing fancy dresses and heels, visiting lovely destinations and just enjoying our time together.

Now that we're fairly settled into our normal lives, I'm back at the grindstone! Lots of auditions and workshops, and I even booked a brand new job--a super-exciting recurring role as Grinder on the new hillbilly soap opera, "The Heart, She Holler"! Produced, written & directed by the minds behind Wondershowzen and South Park (Vernon Chatman & John Lee), it's going to be a LIVE show on the Adult Swim programming block. :D

I am super-psyched to work with this fantastic team on a crass, ridiculous, offensive sitcom. ;) Here's a sneak peek!

I grew up in the sticks of Jersey, and as my best friend wisely said, "You always come full circle." ;) Can't wait to see you in the Holler!

This past week, I was put on-hold for a principal role in "Men In Black III"!

While I didn't book the role, I was extremely close, and I would have spent 2 days with Will Smith.

(This is a major career fantasy of mine.)

Worry not--when I *do* get to work with Big Willie, maybe it will be as his awesome, goofy sidekick. ;) AMAZEBALLS!

I Am Cordially Invited

It feels great to audition for a role, nail it, get called back and finally BOOK it. You work tirelessly to seek out breakdowns and audition notices, to read the piece or watch the content and prepare yourself, and to create a good relationship with your potential employer. You map out how to get there, how much time to allot yourself, and how to be professional but open. It feels darn great to work so fully for yourself and get that reward.

But you know what feels even better?

A phone call or an email that says, "Hey, we're doing [insert title here] and we thought of you--how'd you like to come do this with us?"

Being thought of and INVITED to play feels just fantastic. It's been happening a lot to me, and I'm so delighted! My friends over at Garage Theatre Group invited me to do a super-staged reading of "Mrs. Parker and George S.K...", and my friends at The Theater Project asked me to be in their annual NJ Young Playwrights' Festival! I've been invited by a friend and fledgling headshot photog to do a session with her, and I've got a dear friend writing a pilot with me in mind. What a wonderful feeling!

Gooooooooooals!

What a 2011 I have ahead of me! I've been working very diligently towards some major career goals for the year:

-Book at least 4 more solid co-star/guest star roles in East Coast TV.
-Prepare for a move to LA by early 2012.

These two goals are my bread and butter this year, but a really fun short-term goal for me this spring has been to book a pilot, specifically a sitcom pilot! I did an incredible pilot audition workshop in January, and I've been so excited to see where it takes me!

All of my prep work paid off--I was just called in yesterday for a co-star on a procedural pilot, and asked if I'd be available for a callback. :D

It simply tickles me that, even if you don't get to your ridiculously specific goal (series regular on a sitcom pilot), you can still get darn close!

Preparing to Prepare!

Since this past fall has been so dang AMAZING, I've been reflecting a lot on where I've been, how I got there, and where I have yet to go. I can see so many possibilities in front of me, and it's ridiculously exciting!

How do I feel about 2011? I. AM. STOKED.

This is the first year that I'll be rolling forward with a television trajectory, and it's just in time--in time for entering a contract with my manager, in time for pilot season, and in time for some later work this year in L.A.! All of this combined with my wedding (this May), and I have a heck of joyride planned. XD

I'm starting off with an audition in January for several networks, and the momentum builds from there. I can't wait to crack open the nugget of joy that is 2011!

But for now? I'm going to sip some 'nog. I have presents to wrap. That said, a very merry, joyful, HAPPY holiday season to you all. I hope it brings peace and togetherness and merriment to you and yours!

Filming was GREAT--I some wonderful new friends, I worked with brilliant director Helen Shaver, and I can confirm now that Chris Meloni is hilarious and Mariska Hargitay is the sweetest ever.

Turnaround's quick, so even though we wrapped last week, it's premiering on 11/17!

An Outpouring

ZOMG. I've just come off the most intensely exciting week of my life, EVER!

As per my last post, I just booked (and now just wrapped) a co-star role on "30 Rock." (Let me take a moment to thank my INCREDIBLE manager who gets me so many awesome opportunities!)

So, I knew this was going to be a good deal when the CD chased. Me down. The hall. The director, Todd Holland, was the director for most of "Malcolm in the Middle" (and has won several Emmys) and was just so pleased with my work!

On Monday, I had a very short shoot--I shot my final scene with Jack McBrayer, who plays Kenneth. I cannot even communicate how kind, doting and wonderful the entire team is for "30 Rock." EVERYONE--the PAs, the directors, the sound/props, wardrobe/hair/makeup, cast--made me feel welcome, and like I truly BELONGED and DESERVED to be there.

This is a star-studded show. There aren't a lot of 'mid-range' actors on "30 Rock"--it's like, a co-star or two and the series regulars. So it meant a LOT to be treated as an equal, and as someone who was worthy of working with Emmy-award-winning actors. :) I can confidently say that Jack McBrayer is JUST as sweet as Kenneth, and he was so fun to work with on set!

Today was our final day, and it was a BIG one for me--we filmed the remainder of my scenes. On top of this, we filmed my scenes with the guest star of my episode...which would be Kelsey Grammer. I have been so excited about this! Again, everyone was so kind and good to me--and Kelsey was also REALLY nice. He was so complimentary to me. While we were rehearsing, he told me I was great, fantastic, and called my performance 'epic.' When I finished, he said, "Kid, you SOLD that [scene]!" Can I honestly ask for any more? I really don't think so.

On top of this, I kept getting such consistent great feedback from the director, 2nd director and head writer. These people win EMMYS and they love my work! I am just so thankful and feel incredibly blessed. I had an AMAZING experience with them, and I would love to have the opportunity again!

All this recounting done, I want to SERIOUSLY give you (yes, YOU, ALL of you) a humongous mental hug. The outpouring of love, encouragement and good vibes from my family, friends, peers, co-workers, fellow artists, and even STRANGERS has been so touching. Did you know, the night before my audition, I had a dream that I was flying, and that all my friends were on the ground cheering me on? Well, THIS is why. Because I am a hustling, passionate artist who is so fortunate to have so many people there for me! You guys have made this path so wonderful for me.

Thank you for your e-mails, your comments, your texts, your calls, your messages, your follows, your 'likes'...! ;) I treasure *everything* and the support means more to me than I can express!

I am writing this post from my Netbook, which is the last remaining working piece of technology that I own. Not simultaneously, but at overlapping times, my laptop has died, my incredibly smart phone has died, and...well...my AC has been dodgy, too.

While I think I'm handling the mass exodus of modern technology rather well (the night terrors have subsided), I really miss being Rick-Roll'd every time someone calls me. I miss having an IV line to Twitter. And I think I've been patient enough! Dammit!

That said, I should be receiving both my new phone and new computer in the mail this week. ZOMG.

(Perhaps even on the same day I have a "30 Rock" audition. !But I've said too much!)

See you on the other side of this technological black hole! In the meantime, send a postcard or something.

My Favorite Role

So...I'm clutterbusting.

I'm completely purging my belongings to figure out how much stuff can be donated into the dumpster, because I know that over 50% of it is trash. One of these boxes of joy is simply labeled 'Fern,' and I had to clarify by phone whether or not I could let it go.

"Chris? I...I think it's time. I can't believe I'm saying this."
"No, Jen, I completely understand. Look, it's for the best. I mean, *I* got rid of mine when it was time."
"You did?"
"Oh, yeah. It was hard, but, you know. Just...promise me you'll keep the wig.
...
And the glasses."

What is Fern?

Fern is my aunt. I created her, out of the desperate need to be related to an exaggerated Brooklyn Yenta. Her name (in full) is Fern Lipschitz-Finklestein-Rosenthal, and Herschel (pictured above) is her 2nd husband. Morty Finklestein was her first.

One of my favorite roles ever, Fern and Herschel came into being during my junior year of high school. As you might suspect, I never took a prom seriously, and Auntie Fern effectively crashed the prom. I cannot express the joy I took in buying her '80s gemmed-and-bedazzled grandma sweatshirts and windjackets. Fern was everything I aspired to be--old, loud, and retired in Boca.

Fern continued to make surprise appearances at friends' BBQs, graduation parties, and was even a distinguished guest at my mother's business luncheons (not kidding). She and Herschel were even joined by their deadbeat daughter Joanie, who was a hairdresser from Long Island. She showed up at my birthday parties.

I am still clutterbusting. I will be sending Fern's bedazzled, glittering windpants off into the great unknown. She's tired. She needs shuffleboard and Mah-Jongg and 'her stories' out in Boca. She needs to pester Joanie into "having some grandbabies, for Chrissakes." I will give up the delightful ruse of Auntie Fern, who simply has no room in this artist's humble pad.

But I am keeping my wig. And my damn glasses.

Gig-ity Gig-ities

Though my last long run of a show--"Picasso at the Lapin Agile"--ended in June, I have been jumping from project to project this summer, and it's been such fun!

-Shot the feature "Jack & Diane" as a principal role in June
-Shot an MTV Promo for "Eat Pray Love" (if you've seen this, I'm the chick who digs guys with beards). I haven't been able to see it! If you do--let me know. :)
-Performed an Eve Ensler piece at a benefit for the Bellevue Rape Crisis Center
-Helped out my friends at Porch Light Productions with a children's show for a summer camp
-Helped out my friends at Black20 Studios with a web short about "The Wire"
-Started work on the pilot, "Center Stage." SO EXCITED.

...and, overall, just having some really incredible opportunities and auditions. This includes a great audition (and callback) for an NJ Lotto commercial, some wonderful theatre auditions (I rocked me some "Hairspray"), and my recent deep desire to donate my time and skills to organizations and people who make a real positive difference in the world. I've never had the schedule space to volunteer, and I'm really liking it.

So. If you're itching to go out there and work it, why not help someone out?

100 Facts

WOW! This has been a long time coming. Everyone asks, "So tell me about yourself," and it's implied that it means OUTSIDE of the acting world. I never really thought I had anything to say. After being inspired by my dear friend Erin Cronican, I decided to make my own list. I had no idea it would be as easy or insightful as it was!

1 I misspelled my middle name (Kaitlin) for the first 16 years of my life. My mother corrected me when I was filling out a tax form!

2 I was either going to be Greylon or Jennifer. My parents chose Jennifer because it was 'unique' (spoiler alert: Jennifer was the most popular baby name in my birth year!)

3 My parents didn't name me Greylon because it was the same name as our Golden Retriever. Not kidding.

4 It's pronounced 'PON-tin.' :)

5 I could survive solely on fruit, cheese, bread, fish, tomatoes and Jamba Juice (this makes up 90% of my diet).

6 I always give up on these lists because everything is about performing. I can't help it--my everything is all things artsy!

7 I gave up the clarinet at 11 because I couldn't hit the high notes without squeaking.

8 I always desperately wanted to become proficient with the piano.

9 I wear zero make-up as much as possible.

10 However, you will NEVER find me without earrings! (It's my one girly allowance.)

11 I am atrociously bad at athletic ventures. My classmates can vouch for this. I was a catcher (who never caught the ball) in softball, and I threw elbows like mad in basketball.

12 In fact, I was SO bad compared to the other kids, they threw me into occupational therapy when I was 7. My fine motor skills are through the roof. ;)

13 I am more blissful in water than any other element. Give me a bath, a pool, a lake, a river, a sea...

14 ...This may be in part because 2 of my 3 astrological signs are water (Cancer sun, Scorpio rising, Gemini moon).

15 I am naturally very, very friendly, gregarious and cheerful. It is not an act. Most people ask me, "Are you ALWAYS this happy?" Basically, yes. It's because I'm super-resilient.

16 My resilience has saved my ass MANY times, and it's one of my favorite traits. :)

17 I am an only child.

18 I was a latchkey kid.

19 It may not surprise you that, due to #s 17 and 18, I talk to myself more than most. Like, I talk to myself in long-form monologue for hours on end.

20 I grew up an extremely lonely and extremely isolated child. I was a major outcast and had no friends. While I could easily have become a sociopath, instead I became an exceedingly imaginative and creative person to comfort and entertain myself.

21 I am engaged, and will be married next year (2011). :D

22 My theme song is J.J. Jackson's "It's Alright." No particular reason, but it's funky and bouncy and resilient! It runs through my head every day, and has since I was 14.

23 My favorite music genre is funk/disco. I LOVE LOVE LOVE me some funk.

24 I was a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding when I found out that Michael Jackson died. The mobbed up owner of the place said offhandedly to me, "Ey, Michael Jackson's friggin' dead!" I was scarred. I'm an avid fan, and I'm still trying to deal with it.

25 Thankfully, Prince is still alive. Who I love just as much. I think he is a GENIUS and BRILLIANT and I have a tremendous thing for him. XD

26 I am a lefty. But the big secret? I was SUPPOSED to be a righty. I just sucked the fingers of my right hand and wanted to multitask, so I forced myself to write with my left hand.

27 If you get me past my inhibitions, I will dance like I'm on Soul Train!

28 I've never, ever had a cavity.

29 I actually ENJOY going to the dentist. My dentist and I are BFFs.

30 I'm Jewish. What, I don't look it?

31 I was raised without religion, but I always had a Yiddishe Neshuma--a Jewish soul. I recognized this when I was about 15, and I finally converted to Judaism formally in 2009.

32 I form close bonds with people easily, and I'm a fiercely loyal friend.

34 I am a rabid user of LUSH body products (it's also my non-acting gig).

35 I have a bunny! She lives freely in my apartment. Her name is Moo, and I adopted her for my birthday. She is amazing. If you let me, I will talk about her to you for hours.

36 While I am a bit disorganized, you will find that my planner is the most organized, crazy, color-coded explosion of data! My closet may be messy, but my schedule never is.

37 I am fortunate enough to have a very regular acting gig--as an SP (Standardized Patient). I refer to it as my Kramer job, and I love it a lot.

38 My favorite movie in the entire world is The Big Lebowski.

39 My ALMOST favorite movie in the entire world is Troll II. There was a documentary made on it called "Best Worst Movie."

40 I am a horrorphile. I LOVE horror movies, horror stories, horror EVERYTHING, and the best part is that I'm genuinely scared (and I love it).

41 I think a huge part of the above is that I'm SO imaginative and self-entertaining that I postulate about these adrenaline parties all the time.

42 I read Stephen King books in chronological order. Why? Because his books always have sneaky internal references, and I wanted to start catching all the Dark Tower references strewn throughout the other books.

43 I don't drink alcohol, but I could live on Jamba Juice. (see #5)

44 I'm a barbershop singer.

45 I grew up in the sticks, and I was a member of FFA: Future Farmers of America.

46 I know how to artificially inseminate a cow. (See #45)

47 I learned about the perils of caffeine when I was 11, drinking cup after cup of iced tea and not being able to fall asleep for 4 hours. I'm very careful with my dosage!

48 I am forcing myself to learn Twitter. I thought I'd hate it, but it's actually even better for networking than Facebook!

49 It is a dream of mine to have a duck imprint to me and then live with me in my house. Also in my dream, it loves Moo (see #35).

50 My fiance says the above is fine, as long as I promise to name it L'Orange.

51 I drink my coffee iced year-round.

52 I love to craft with fabrics. When I get the urge, I make curtains or bedding or inserts for clothing. I'm not a seamstress by any stretch, but I AM creative, and I can attempt to sew.

53 I'm very into essential oils and their healing properties.

54 I know the entire rap to TLC's "Waterfalls" by the late Left-Eye (and I can do it pretty well, too!)

55 I'm very social and love to be with people, but since I was raised alone, I need a LOT of alone time.

57 I love my parents dearly. That said, they are NOTHING like me. They're pretty reserved and introverted, and I'm a chatty bohemian weirdo.

58 I grew up with a big backyard, and for years I had this great 'fort' in the middle of a bunch of big pine trees. I kept plants and kid furniture there for years, and it was the best until some teenagers ripped it down.

59 My favorite holiday is SHARK WEEK. I am a shark-o-phile!

61 Call the ending laughable if you like, but I think "Stephen King's IT" is one of the most well-cast and well-done of King's movies. Tim Curry is insane!

62 "IT" is also my favorite book ever (and if the movie is great, the book is MIND BLOWING).

63 I used to have dreams that I joined forces with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees and Pennywise the Clown, offering to be their goody-two-shoes friend in exchange for not being their victim.

64 I love to kayak, but only on my inflatable one (it's easier to take swim breaks)!

65 I went to Girl Scout Camp for about 8 years. I know oodles of camp songs, I can pitch a tent in a pinch, and I'm not too wussy for latrines.

89 My favorite place ever (thus far) has been Alaska, particularly Juneau. It's northwestern rainforest! Giant trees and turqoise lakes and massive glaciers....guh.

A Sizzling Summer

And not just because last week was host to 3 days that topped 99 degrees (THAT was fun). So, where did we last leave off? Oh right! JACK & DIANE!

I had a really, really fantastic time on the shoot. I did not get to meet Ben Foster (his grandma was ill), but I DID get to work with Juno Temple (Lola in "Atonement"), and she was just a gem. Everyone I worked with was so kind and professional, it was just incredibly affirming and encouraging. :)

This leads to...

...MY SAG CARD! I just received a lovely letter in the mail from SAG inviting me to be a part of the prestigious union. YIPPEE! So that will be in the works shortly. :)

Other recent excitement?

-I was called back for a commercial for Hasbro (Angela Mickey, CD)
-I auditioned for the lovely Stephanie Klapper (CD, Stephanie Klapper Casting)
-I finished my run of "Picasso"! It was so good.
-I auditioned for "My Big Gay Italian Wedding"
-I filmed my Actor Intro!
-I was called in for a REALLY exciting pilot, "Small Actors"
-I was called in by a favorite CD, Michael Cassara, for this year's workshop of "Fat Camp" (last year I was called back several times for Britta)

I am also taking a TREMENDOUSLY exciting intensive with PalmStar Entertainment. Their casting associates had cast me in "Jack and Diane," and it's so great to see them again! I'm doing different sides for them each week, and last week's feedback was really encouraging--"That was really, really great. I don't even need to see another take." I'm really looking forward to this week's class!

Oh, and today I had a slammin' "Hairspray" audition.

When it Rains Lollipops, it Pours REALLY Big Lollipops.

Here I was, moseying along, waiting for my show to open, and BAM.

It did, and the weekend has been nothing but amazing news!

"Picasso at the Lapin Agile" opened to GREAT audiences, and we simply had a blast. I had some of my most treasured friends come out for the opening weekend! This morning, a rave review flies into my inbox from the local Ridgewood Patch.

"True Picasso and Einstein drive the plot and play, but barfly Gaston (J. Michael Polisano) and barmaid Germaine (Jen Ponton) vie for top billing."

Read the rest of the fablulosity HERE! The show was well-loved, well-received and very well-played (I am just crazy about the cast).

Good News #2: I receive a phone call from my manager today. He asks how my day is going. I say that it's great. He says he hopes he's about to make it better (!). Last month I auditioned for a SAG Low-budget feature, "Jack & Diane." I hadn't heard anything, so I assumed it was finished, y'know? Turns out, they wanted to book me for the role (a principal)!

OHMAZING.

OH. And it's not yet over. I'm about to geek out, here. So in my scene, it's basically me and a sort-of a frat boy, and my manager says, "It'll be you and Ben Foster." Hmm. That name sounds familiar. I sidle up to Google and confirm what I'd imagined--Ben Foster was Tucker in Disney's "Flash Forward" (which was an incredible show)!

I. LOVED. That show. So I'm super-excited to work with him, and I'm really hoping I don't swallow my tongue.

Erm...sorry about that, then. :/

The past month or two has been crazy, seeing as on the closing day of "Wizard of Oz," I was in a very nasty car accident. I spent half of March convalescing, half of March auditioning, and now I'm ready to roll with another show--I'm opening "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" in June! It's a fun, NJ-based show with a really great up-and-coming company, Porch Light Productions. If you're aware of how I feel about both NJ and Steve Martin, you can perhaps understand how much I enjoy the show. AND I'm French! I love the French!

Since I last posted, LOTS of crazy wonderful stuff has happened:
-I was asked to send in materials for a role in which Nikki Blonsky was finally cast
-I both booked and filmed the FOX pilot "Undisputed" with Black20 Studios
-I was called back for 3 different productions
-I auditioned for a boatload of shows, as well as the feature "Jack & Diane"
-I booked and shot a print job for a girls' body image book, by famed writer Nancy Redd

So--overall--minus a totaled car and lots of bruising, it's been a good few months. I have some great auditions coming up this week that I'm quite excited about, so we'll see how they go. :)

(Again, sorry about the leave of absence. I'll try to limit those. xx)

2009: A Year in Revue

(Oh, I shouldn't tease. There's no real revue. Yet.)

Most people compile wonderful lists like these immediately prior to or -following the turn of the year. However, considering that I spent New Year's Eve hallucinating in bed with a fever, perhaps it was wise to wait until my first flu of 2010 passed.

I like to extend wishes and gratitude to those who I met, auditioned for and/or had the opportunity of working with at the end of the year, and to do this I need to compile a list of exactly where I auditioned, who it was for, etc. I am delighted to say that this list was a big success!

January of 2009...
...I had 9 auditions and both a callback and job offer for Manhattan Children's Theatre
...I began rehearsals for the Bergen County production of "The Vagina Monologues" for V-Day
...I began rehearsals for productions with Puppetry Arts Theatre

February of 2009...
...I had 7 auditions and callbacks for both Periwinkle Theatre for Youth and New Acting Company
...I auditioned for and started working with my current representation, Prestige Management Group
...I performed with Puppetry Arts Theatre aboard the USS Intrepid!

March of 2009...

...I had 8 auditions, including one for a Showtime pilot, one for an infomercial, and one for "Hairspray" (which I was called back for)
...I booked the role of Mother Doe in "Bambi," an original musical with Pax Amicus Castle Rep.

November of 2009...
...I auditioned for and was offered the role of Candy in "13 Fat Girls and a Dead Cat"
...I booked a B-roll gig on "Maury"!

December of 2009...
...I opened "13 Fat Girls and a Dead Cat"
...I became a fiancee (not career, but awesome nonetheless!)
...I opened "Bambi"
...I had 2 auditions, and was offered the dual role of the Wicked Witch/Wizard of Oz in "The Wizard of Oz" with Pax Amicus Castle Rep.

Overall, a freaking fantastic year! I worked with and met loads of wonderful people, got a lot of good work and shows under my belt, and I'm feeling good about 2010. :) Be well and enjoy the new year!

Happy Holidays, dear friends! Hope they have been, and are continuing to be, safe and full of good food and company.

Thankfully, I'm hitting 2010 running--I auditioned for an original musical of "The Wizard of Oz" and landed the dual roles of the Wicked Witch of the West and the actual Wizard of Oz! You know this game, by now. Here are pictures of me as per mad MS Paint (TM) skills.

No Longer Undead

"13 Fat Girls" was ridiculously fun, and so many dear friends came out! Amazingly, we were all so excited and giddy that not a SOUL took a picture of themselves as zombies. What?! I even prepared and had my best friend bring her camera to take shots. *sigh*

That said, here is a depiction of me as a zombie, using MS Paint.

Thanks to those of you who came out! Blood was spilled, spleens were eaten, and a good time was had by all!

"Bambi" Romps through Budd Lake

Hi folks! I hope Thanksgiving treated everyone well, particularly to leftovers.

What A RUSH!

Boy, how I love rush calls! Nothing does a better job of spiking my adrenaline than getting a call (sometimes still in jammies) from an agent or CD: "Are you free to get here as soon as humanly possible?!"

HECK YES I AM.

You may as well bottle the stuff that goes through my veins as I rocket through the house, getting wardrobe, doing my make-up and grabbing my keys.

Today, I recived a call from Barbizon, and I was immediately booked for a gig on Maury. Yes, with Maury Povich, who I've promised myself that I will marry. I'm not a volunteer guest--those don't necessarily hire actors--but rather to impersonate a previous guest, who apparently looks like me.

So now I'm at MoPo Studios, watching Ellen (et tu, Brute?).

Afterwards, hopping to the city for first zombie rehearsal!

My Every Zombie Dream Has Come True

This December, I am honored to work with my very favorite playwright, Lena Cigleris, who is making a brilliant career out of writing the darkest-of-the-dark black, horror comedies.

Two reasons I love this:
1. Her humor is amazing, and
2. She loves to write about serial killers/monsters/zombies/etc.

If you must know one thing about me, know this: I adore this genre. I live on Stephen King, John Carpenter and David Cronenberg.

So what's the play? It's called "13 Fat Girls and a Dead Cat," and in it I play Candy, the zombie mistress of a serial killer with a serious penchant for slaying big girls.

Curtain's up just in time for Hanukkah, running at 10pm on 12/11 and 12/12 at the Producer's Club. :)

Random Gigs

One of my favorite parts of being an actor is doing the countless gigs that aren't necessarily acting...but aren't quite normal work, either. (This is how we survive when we're not doing a show, if we're lucky.) Thankfully, I've done boatloads of these, and I've got a packed week of them coming up!

What might these include, you may ask?

-Party princesses
-Promotional foot teams (Yup, those obnoxious folk with flyers who flag you down)
-Promo people who give you free juice or products
-Friendly people who lead fun events at grand openings
-Giant mascot-headed Blues, Mickeys and Spongebobs
-Singing telegrams (they still exist!)
-Standardized Patients in medical facilities
-Fun, energetic people to lead corporate teambuilding events or exercises
-Actors in corporate-held murder mysteries

...and countless more!

Last week I helped a team of suits make bridges out of chocolate. This week I'll be a patient, a leader in a corporate event scavenger hunt, and a leader in a corporate event to put bicycles together for charity.

I may have to expand my special skills section.

Mother?....MOTHER?!....

These are words you will NOT hear when I do "Bambi" this winter with Pax Amicus Castle Rep. My third children's show with them, the Barber/Gandolfo original musical does not include dying mother deer, forest fires or trigger-happy hunters. I was just cast, um, yesterday, as Mother Doe. We start rehearsals on Sunday!

In other fun news, I got a very sweet thank-you email from the artistic director of the "Hairspray" audition. He said he hopes to cast by the beginning of November. I'm crossing everything I've got!

Hey folks!

After over a month of performances, Kate Smith is closing today! It's been an absolutely wonderful run, reflected in ticket sales--we sold out of tickets by the end of the first week. :)

For those of you unable to attend, yes, I *did* sing "God Bless America" and "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain." For those of you who were able to make it out, THANK YOU! This has been such a fun show! :)

In other news...

While doing the show, I've been going on quite a number of auditions for theatre, film and TV. Recently, I had an audition and callback for the feature film "Blissestrasse," as well as a pilot for the Showtime network! I was also recently asked to do an infomercial. The next Billy Mays? :)

I've also auditioned for many reputable theatre companies: Two River Theatre Co. (Red Bank, NJ), Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre (West Orange, NJ), and--the most exciting of all!--I had a tremendous callback last week for "Hairspray" at the Derby Dinner Playhouse in Louisville, KY! We shall see...

Hey Folks!

Welcome to the new JenPonton.com! It'll soon be something even spiffier, but for the time being, it's my new bloggy-blog.

As of tomorrow, I close my 2-month run of "Mrs. Gould Welcomes Kate Smith," the biological musical in which I've been playing the legendary Kate! The show is with St. George Productions, a company which specializes in original shows chronicling the lives of celebrities of ages past.

Kate reveals rarely-heard secrets of her life, including the pain and heartache that came from her body image in the theater, as well as her family's initial disapproval of her career. Even through her trials, she glows and exudes the spirit and strength of a star!

I'll miss being Kate. Here's to a wonderful closing show!
